Sustainability & ESG Reporting Intern 1
  1.  Position Summary

The Energy Data & Benchmarking Intern supports the delivery of high-quality benchmarking and energy performance services in alignment with SIG’s mission to promote a more sustainable built environment. As a member of SIG’s ENERGY STAR & Ordinances team, the intern will assist with utility data management, ENERGY STAR certifications, ordinance research, and client support tasks across a portfolio of commercial buildings. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with energy data systems, building performance benchmarking tools, and sustainability compliance programs. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and passionate about energy efficiency, data accuracy, and environmental responsibility.

 

  1. Responsibilities

Energy Data Management & ENERGY STAR Support

  • Enter, verify, and organize utility data (energy, water, waste) for client properties using ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager.
  • Support the ENERGY STAR certification process, including coordinating building walkthroughs and documentation needs.
  • Collaborate with the ENERGY STAR & Ordinances team and data analysts to ensure proper documentation and project tracking.
  • Maintain accurate daily logs of hours worked and task completion for assigned projects.

Research & Educational Support

  • Research local, state, and national benchmarking and building performance ordinances.
  • Monitor changes in energy-related regulations, including performance metrics and compliance deadlines.
  • Aggregate or draft educational materials related to ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and benchmarking best practices.
  • Research and present findings on energy data platforms and emerging tools relevant to building performance management.

Business Development & Outreach Support

  • Identify opportunities for SIG to expand client support in new cities or states with emerging energy ordinances.
  • Support internal presentations and discussions by providing research on energy efficiency trends and regulations.

Learning & Professional Development

  • Gain practical experience with ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and local compliance programs.
  • Participate in a mid-internship evaluation to support performance growth and mentorship.
  • Access credential resources as part of SIG’s professional development program.

  1. Education and Experience

Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.A.) in a related field such as Environmental Science, Sustainability, Engineering, Architecture, Business, or Data Analytics. Prior internship, academic, or project experience related to energy benchmarking, sustainability, or utility data analysis is preferred but not required. A strong interest in energy efficiency, building performance, and tools such as ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager is highly encouraged.

Technical /Business Unit Related Skills & Knowledge: The technical skills and knowledge that are important for a specific role that enable an employee to fulfil the technical and business needs of their role. This is to be defined by the respective business unit/department and will be evaluated in performance assessments.

  • Strong organizational skills and acute attention to detail, particularly in managing large datasets and verifying utility data.
  • Clear and professional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, meet deadlines, and adapt to evolving project priorities.
  • Demonstrated interest in energy efficiency, building performance, or sustainability in the built environment.
  • Willingness to learn new technical concepts, ask questions, and receive feedback constructively.
  • Academic or project experience related to energy benchmarking, environmental science, or utility data management.
  • Basic data analysis skills or experience (e.g., Excel formulas, pivot tables, charts, or data validation techniques).
